What is an SR-22?

An SR-22, also known as a certificate of financial responsibility (CFR), is a required document for license reinstatement. This type of policy is considered “high-risk” and is provided by an auto insurance company. You may be required to carry this policy for up to three years, depending on the incident. Some examples of incidents that may require you to carry this type of high-risk policy include driving while uninsured, being involved in an accident, or driving under the influence (DUI). Since these are high-risk policies, insurance companies typically charge a much higher premium compared to your average insurance policy. Despite their costliness, it is important to remember that you must maintain the SR-22 policy for the specified duration of time. Should it cancel or lapse for any reason, the insurance company is legally required to file an SR-26, which notifies the state.

SR-22 Missouri Minimum State Requirements:
- 25,000 dollars bodily injury or death of one person.
- 50,000 dollars bodily injury or death of two or more persons w/ $25,000 limit pp.
- 10,000 dollars of destruction of private property.

While these are the minimum legal liability limits, higher liability coverage is always available and will give you better protection in the event of an accident.
