As with any insurance policy, it's important to find the best coverage to suit your budget and lifestyle, and auto insurance is no different. In the event of an accident or loss, you want to know that your vehicle is appropriately covered, which is why our team at Douglas & Associates is dedicated to guiding you with any and all insurance-related decisions. Is paying an extra $30 annually worth having towing and rental reimbursement? Why turn in a claim that is comparable to the cost of your deductible when it will also raise your premium for the next five years? These are the types of questions we answer for our customers day-in and day-out. Let us help you find the right auto policy.

And if you're just trying to understand what basic car insurance coverage looks like, we’ve got you covered! Below are the basic types of car insurance coverage:

Liability Insurance

In the event that you are at fault for an accident, this type of insurance coverage pays for injuries or property damage to any other parties involved. States require this by law as a basic coverage. Minimum liability coverage varies by state.

Collision insurance

Collision coverage refers to damages to your vehicle that are caused in a car accident. If you choose to have collision coverage, you will be expected to pay the deductible while an insurance company pays for the rest of the costs to repair. The higher the deductible you pay, the less collision coverage will cost. Although this type of coverage is only required if you have a car loan (or lien holder), it’s often recommended for newer vehicles. Keep in mind the value of your car and the cost for this type of coverage when considering if collision coverage is best for you.

Comprehensive Insurance (Other than Collision)

Comprehensive coverage is anything but collision damage; think vandalism damage, windshield damage, hail damage, etc. And like with collision, comprehensive coverage requires that the insured first pay a deductible before the insurance company kicks in. Although it's not legally required by any state, you will likely be required to carry this if you have a car loan.

Medical payments

This is coverage for you or your passengers' in the event of an accident, regardless of who was at fault. This is another optional coverage, and is not available in every state. However, Missouri and Illinois both offer this type of coverage.
